Americans Who Remember 1976 Bicentennial - Forced or Fun

Would like to hear from people old enough to have meaningful memories of the Bicentennial. Did it feel as forced, as "nobody's in the mood for this nonsense," as what-are-we-supposed-to-celebrate, as this feeble attempt to "celebrate" 250 is turning out to be? Or was it actually, like, fun?
