Church Historians - Prayer List Shut-Ins Origins

I'm looking at the prayer lists from a bunch of churches as part of research/prep for a story I'm working on and so many of these have a whole dedicated section for "shut-ins"... is that normal? or new? my church growing up definitely didn't have a section like that
