Why Most Disability Support Systems Focus on Control Instead of Respecting Human Rights
Episode 88 of Nick Speaks dropped Tuesday, April 28.
This week, I sat down with Jeanne Stuntz, Executive Director of Dynamic Pathways, to talk about the disability system—how it operates, who it serves, and where it falls short.
Jeanne’s journey in disability started at just 11 years old, babysitting two boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy—a condition where women often carry the gene, but it primarily affects boys. What started as a job quickly became something more. She realized early on that this was her calling—and that perspective has shaped the work she does today.
This conversation goes deeper than surface-level talking points. We get into the reality of the system, the role of Human Rights Committees, how COVID expanded control measures, and why the ADA is overdue for updates.
Now I want to hear from you—especially those working in policy or inside the system across the country:
Do you believe the system is built more on control or freedom?
If you want to come on the show and talk about it—or just share your thoughts—email me at [email redacted].
And if you know me at all, you already know where I stand. I believe the system leans far more toward control than freedom—and I’m working hard to change that.
I don’t plan on posting every episode here—but if you want me to, tell me.
