Dual Tesla Owners With Powerwall - Single-Phase 80A Automation
How Gavin automated dual Tesla charging & a Powerwall on a single-phase 80A supply using Amber APIs (with GitHub repo)
A common issue for Australian households with multiple EVs and home batteries is running out of headroom on a standard single-phase grid connection (usually capped at 63A–80A). Upgrading to three-phase power often costs thousands in trenching and network fees.
Gavin from Canberra found a software-driven way around this. He set up an automated system to manage two Teslas, a Tesla Powerwall, and solar on an 80A single-phase connection without blowing the main fuse.
How the setup works:
Live Wholesale Pricing: Pulls real-time 5-minute pricing and forecast data via the Amber Electric API.
Dynamic Load Balancing: Automatically throttles Tesla charging amperage down when household baseline loads or battery charging peak, and ramps charging up when prices drop (or go negative).
Powerwall Automation: Coordinates home battery charging/discharging to prevent grid export curtailment penalties and maximize self-consumption.
He shared his full breakdown and made his GitHub repo public so others can inspect the automation logic or adapt it for their own Home Assistant/custom setups.
