Hi :) just wanted to share a mini-update. Recognize this emoji π ?
You probably do, because Mahjong's (ιΊ»ε°) popularity has grown dramatically. While already a household staple for many, it's becoming a social game for more now, especially in the US, where more people are learning it to connect and get away from screens. Tech neck is replaced by Mahjong neck.
One thing I love about the game is that there are so many variations of it; from different regions in Asia, to house rule intricacies. While the Hong-Kong style is the most documented and generally the most popular, that is not what I started with. After both playing the game in the US and reading Nicole Wong's book Mahjong: House Rules from Across the Asian Diaspora, I realized just how many styles and scoring systems exist. And while I previously made a scoring guide for family friends on a piece of scratch paper, her work on preserving the culture has inspired me to make that a reality.
Growing up in a Filipino-Chinese household, I thought the de facto was playing with 16 tiles under the air conditioner. Our extended family played with rules more akin to the Taiwanese than the Filipino style, but the scoring slightly varies.
So!
I've been working on an interactive display of the Filipino-Chinese variation, complete with rules and scoring guide. It's still in progress, but if you, or anyone you know, has played this style and wants to help get the rules right, I'd love to hear from you! My Ah-Ma (grandma) doesn't use LinkedIn, but she's already my primary source, whether she likes it or not.
