Forensic Toxicologist - Meth Vs Kratom & 7OH Cause of Death
Question about toxicology in cause of death. Meth/kratom/7OH
I’m a journalist working on a story about unintentional kratom related overdoses and have a question about the cause of death in a specific case.
I’m asking this question off the record in hopes of learning more about toxicology and what questions to ask.
The individual in question died of a suspected accidental kratom/7OH overdose. There was a half empty bottle found next to his bed. Other than alcohol, no other substances or paraphernalia found.
We got the toxicology report back and found out they didn’t test for Kratom. They labeled the cause of death as acute methamphetamine intoxication.
However, the results say “positive lower than the lowest calibrator of 20 ug/L”
Is that enough to indicate he overdosed from meth? There’s no history of him using meth or hard drugs. His close friends and s/o said that’s not something he would ever do.
The report also indicates a negative result for all other substances tested for.
The only prescription medication he was on was Adderall.
He had been reportedly using kratom and 7OH for two months prior to his death and had a severe medical incident one month prior after taking a 7OH pill while under the influence of alcohol.
Another request to the ME has been made to retest for kratom.
