Health Policy Experts & Prop 38 Supporters - Questions on $8.4B Bond
California voters are being asked to borrow $8.4 BILLION for medical research.
Half of it could go to ONE institute.
And the ballot measure doesn’t name that institute.
Proposition 38 promises funding for research into cancer, Alzheimer’s, heart disease, and other conditions. That sounds compelling.
But look at how the money is divided:
$4.2 billion would fund research grants.
The other $4.2 billion would go to an institute selected under a detailed set of qualifications. CalMatters found those qualifications appear to point to one UCLA affiliated institute.
The Yes campaign disputes that finding.
California’s Legislative Analyst estimates the bond would cost $500 million to $600 million a year for about 20 years.
Revenue from future discoveries could offset some of that cost, but no one knows how much or when.
I’m going to sit down with Dr. Robert Kaplan, Director of Research at the Clinical Excellence Research Center at Stanford and former NIH associate director who opposes Prop 38, and dig into the details on Healthcare Uncut.
What questions do you want me to ask him?
And if you support Prop 38, I want to hear your strongest argument for it, too.
