High School Teachers in SE Michigan for Admin Experience Interview

Should high school administrators be required to have teaching experience at the secondary level? It's a discussion one of my respondents and I had this weekend. If you've never been inside the classroom, can you truly lead a building effectively? Personally, as a college administrator, I find that it's essential to remain in the classroom so I have a better understanding of what's going on. What are your thoughts? How effective is your administration?
