Humanitarian Logistics Professionals - AI-Powered Aid Prioritization
Last week, I watched an AI system decide which hospital would get emergency medical supplies first, in a conflict zone where that decision meant life or death.
It made me ask: Who programmed that decision? What values did they encode?
Here's what I'm seeing in humanitarian operations right now:
π€ World Food Programme's AI-powered routing cut delivery delays by 23% in Syria
π€ United Nations OCHA's prediction models forecast refugee movements 4-8 weeks in advance
π€ Computer vision is catching supply diversion before it happens
This is real. It's operational. It's working.
But, and this matters, AI doesn't solve humanitarian logistics. It amplifies our choices about what to optimize for.
When you deploy an algorithm, you're answering hard questions:
Do we prioritize speed or equity?
Which regions get data-informed decisions?
What happens when the algorithm says "this delivery is inefficient", but those are the people who need it most?
