I posted this graphic on my Fashion instagram account and it got me thinking, so I thought I would share it here along with a request. I wrote this with professional creatives in mind, as it can be a hard slog at times with undefined paths and indeterminate outcomes, though I know this can be true with all vocations.
Especially starting this journey in my late 40's as a professional photographer and creative, I am acutely aware of the desire to accelerate things and make progress while there's "still time", and while my energy and body are still good... like I am chasing a setting sun before the darkness falls.
I do definitely take things differently than I would if I was in my 20's, without kids and household needs... for example moving cities just to chase opportunities. Instead I have worked hard to exercise my unfair advantages - primarily skills learned the hard way through a few decades of business, project, and team management.
By far the biggest hard-won advantages personally have been patience and timing... Paired with massive action when it is the right time, this has been a game-changer. Even so, I still find myself pulling and rushing, when I should be doing otherwise, so I always benefit from reminders, even just to myself.
I don't know how many others feel like this - that there are different drawbacks and benefits to starting new things in your 20's and 30's, versus your 40's and 50's - and therefore different advantages to lean into.
I would love to hear your thoughts about this, either in public or in private. I have a project coming up where I am looking to interview people who have undergone mid-life career changes, particularly into creative fields.
So let's connect!
