Oncologists Working 70+ Hours - Burnout & Clinic Staffing Strain
One aspect of cancer care that I'm particularly interested in is burnout among oncologists. ASCO has tracked a significant spike in burnout rates leading to "emotional exhaustion, a lack of empathy or negative attitudes toward patients, and feelings of decreased personal achievement." Comparing surveys between 2013 and 2023, the burnout rate jumped from 45% to 59% -- 82% for oncologists working more than 70 hours a week. (That's a ridiculous and dangerous schedule.) In the meantime, you have less support staff among the clinics looking to beef up the bottom line, leaving oncologists to juggle insurance denials, etc etc etc. It's a recipe for disaster. I'd be very interested in talking to front-line oncologists facing this situation. Drop me a line at [email redacted].
