My brain moves in mysterious ways. So it goes.
My first dog was the greatest dog in the world.I realize every dog owner says this, but every other dog owner is completely wrong. When he was getting older, I asked my mom, “How do you know when they are ready to go? How will I know when I need to call the vet?”
Her answer was not helpful.“When they are ready, they will let you know.” That was it. No checklist. No instructions for how to handle it.Something I had never seen before was just supposed to let me know.
I remember thinking, “What if I miss it?” I didn’t.
One afternoon in September 2020, he let me know. One look into his eyes, and I knew. I needed to find a strength I had never needed before and make the hardest phone call of my life.
And so I did.I made the call.Three days later, we said a tearful goodbye.
Fast-forward to February 2026.I found myself with $17 left in my bank account because I had spent nearly everything I had on an appointment with a new counselor—a heart healer for sure, and someone who had become an old friend in an instant.
I sat there exhausted and in tears while she told me something I once again didn't understand. “People like us don't just grow. They grow exponentially.”
When someone who has spent years caring for everyone else finally begins caring for themselves, the growth can be powerful. At the time, I didn't believe her. Then I began to see it.
So there I was, at the edge of something I had never done before, needing a strength I didn't know I possessed.
This year has been full of changes, certifications, ideas, hard work, and small steps that have somehow accumulated into something much larger than I expected.Sometimes it feels like standing in the ocean, enjoying the waves while simultaneously being drowned by them. But somewhere, tumbling around in all of that noise, I had one clear thought:
What if the moments that change our lives aren't actually the big moments? What if they are the tiny ones?
The first step toward something we are still afraid to name.
Those moments rarely look impressive from the outside. But sometimes, they change everything.
So I have an idea. I want to hear about the tiny thing you did that turned out to huge.Maybe it changed the way you saw yourself. Maybe it changed the direction of your life. Maybe nobody else even noticed.
That's okay. I'd like to share these stories on Instagram so other people can see that sometimes courage looks remarkably ordinary. It rarely receives applause.
If you have a small act of courage that made a big difference in your life, I'd love to hear it.Send me your random thought from your very real life by filling out the form contained in the link below. You never know who might need to hear it.Perhaps your small act of courage will become someone else's first step toward greatness.
