Is pet insurance really worth it? I joined Sheba Turk on CBS Los Angeles to discuss a question I hear more and more frequently from pet owners: Should I buy pet insurance? As a practicing veterinarian, I see both sides of this issue every day. Advances in veterinary medicine mean we can diagnose and treat conditions today that we couldn't have imagined earlier in my career—but that level of care can also come with significant costs. Pet insurance can be an invaluable financial safety net. But not all policies are alike, and the details matter. Before purchasing a policy, pet owners need to understand questions such as: • What is—and isn't—covered? • How are pre-existing conditions defined? • Are there waiting periods? • What are the deductible and reimbursement percentage? • Are there annual or lifetime limits? • Does coverage change as the pet ages? • Can you continue seeing the veterinarian you trust? One point I emphasized on CBS: The worst time to learn what your policy doesn't cover is when your pet is already sick and you're facing a large veterinary bill.
