Rural Newsroom Managers - Recruiting Staff on Tight Budgets

I just spoke with a managing editor at a locally owned newspaper group. It's one of the places I identified last month that advertised a job with a starting salary of $30-35K. We talked about how far that salary can go in the primarily rural coverage area, and the benefits that are in place to supplement it: everything from solid health insurance to connections to property managers for apartment seekers. One of the things that stood out to me was the gap between meeting the cost of living and coming out ahead. "As far as getting to the next level, saving and that kind of thing, I think that's where it becomes a challenge," she said. "Trying to get them to not be living paycheck to paycheck."
