The salmon industry is currently bracing for what experts, including NOAA Fisheries, are predicting to be a "very strong" El Niño. UN Secretary-General António Guterres recently said that he expected the impacts of the weather pattern to "hit even harder, travel even farther, and cross borders with devastating speed" this year. For the salmon sector, warmer water, harmful algal blooms, and disrupted harvest timings are all on the table, with some of these conditions already being reported.
