SNAP-Medicaid Eligibility Staff for Benefits Process Insights
Looking to hear from folks who’ve worked on the benefits side (SNAP/Medicaid)
Hey all,
I’m working on a piece about how public benefits actually function behind the scenes—specifically SNAP and Medicaid in Indiana and other states. I’d love to hear from current or former eligibility workers, case managers, or call center staff who’ve seen the process up close.
A few things I’m curious about:
How much is really “just the algorithm” vs. human discretion
What pressures staff face (caseloads, quotas, policies)
How verification documents get interpreted differently by different workers
What you wish the public understood about your job
NOTE: Please include your state in replies.
You can comment here or DM me if you’d prefer. Anonymity is totally fine—I’m not looking to single anyone out, just to highlight systemic patterns.
Thanks in advance for sharing your perspective. Your insights could help shine a light on how these systems really work.
