Next year will mark 50 years since the first-ever episode of Top Gear was broadcast from Pebble Mill Studios in Birmingham on BBC One Midlands in 1977. While I remember the 2002 reboot of Top Gear as clear as day, I've been recently watching episodes of 'old' Top Gear. For me, it's about understanding what made TG such a hit with viewers not just in the UK, but around the world. I'm working on a story, focusing on the Birmingham origins behind Top Gear and how BBC Birmingham gave us the world's biggest motoring TV show. In particular, I'm keen to interview a range of people for this feature, from producers and behind-the-scenes staff to presenters who worked on old and new Top Gear.
