Veterans & CAF on Gen Z Civilian vs Military Service-Canadian Affairs

Canadian veterans and CAF members: Why would Gen Z say yes to civilian service but no to military? Hello, my name is Alexandra Keeler and I’m a journalist with Canadian Affairs. I’m working on a story about new polling data showing that Canadians aged 18–29 are more enthusiastic about mandatory civilian service (disaster response, public health, environmental projects, youth work) than about military service. Many outlets have reported on these stats, but few have asked the people most connected to service. I’d like to understand how veterans and CAF members view this generational difference. Why do you think younger Canadians lean toward civilian service? Does this reflect a shift in values, a misunderstanding of military service, or something else? I won't quote anyone in this thread without consent. If anyone here is open to a short interview (phone, video call, or even just DM/email), I’d be grateful to include your voice in the story. Thank you for your service and for considering sharing your perspective.
