Architects & Therapists - Childhood Home Influences On Adult Spaces

I've been thinking about a question that sits at the intersection of psychology, design, and our relationship with the built environment: What did you create in your adult home that was missing from the home you grew up in? Maybe it was privacy. Beauty. Stability. Order. Nature. Warmth. A place to retreat. A table where people gather. Space to make things. Or simply the freedom to decide what your surroundings looked and felt like. I'm becoming increasingly interested in the possibility that some of what we think of as aesthetic preference may also have a personal history—and in how the environments we create can contribute to psychological safety, restoration, and nervous-system regulation. ThroughSpatial Instincts, I'm beginning an independent interview and writing project exploring these questions more deeply. I'm interested in hearing from people who recognize this pattern in their own lives, and I'd also love to connect witharchitects, designers, psychotherapists, environmental psychologists, neuroscientists, researchers, artists, and educatorswhose work intersects with these ideas. I'm especially interested in conversations around personal history and place, psychological safety, sensory experience, environmental psychology, neuroaesthetics, and the ways environments can support well-being. If this connects with something you've experienced, studied, designed, or observed professionally, I'd love to hear from you.
