I came across a video on Tiktok where Travellers were on the road for two days, a woman brushed her teeth on the highway, not at home. On the Benin-Asaba Road.
With sachet water.
She had been stuck in traffic for 2 days. A journey that should take 7 hours now takes 4 DAYS.
I reported this story for NewsDigest and I have not been able to get the feeling out of my head.
Road block.
Drivers sleeping on the bare ground.
Food trucks stranded while prices rise in Onitsha and Lagos markets.
This is the 125km road that connects South-South to South-East and North.
How did we get here?
In Jan 2023, it was concessioned to BAECC on a 25-year PPP deal. Promise: Fix it in 3 years.
By Aug 2026: Total collapse.
Minister of Works, David Umahi said the company scarified good asphalt and abandoned it to rain. Now FG has taken over under "Operation Rescue" and EFCC is probing the project.
I will be honest. This rescue should not have taken a viral outcry.
My take:
Bad roads are not just about potholes. They are about food security, inflation, and human dignity.
I want to hear from you:
1. Have you plied the Benin-Asaba road in the last 2 weeks? What did you see?
2. Do you think PPP road concessions are working in Nigeria?
Drop your experience in the comments. I am reading every one. And I will be following up with a part 2 of this story based on your responses.
