Brand Licensing Expert in Japan - Foreign Brand IP Merchandising

Very random journalist request: Can anyone explain why in Japan (and maybe East Asia more broadly) a lot of random foreign brands license their IP for merchandise? Like why, in 2024, did I encounter so many SPAM branded products? Working on a story for The Verge and want to pick someone’s brain!!
