THE BEST DATA GOVERNANCE PLATFORM DOESN’T EXIST. Collibra. Alation. Microsoft Purview. Atlan. Informatica. IBM. Ask which one is best and you’ll probably get six different answers. And strangely enough, they may all be right. Because the better question isn’t: “Which Data Governance platform is best?” It’s: “Which one is right for the governance problem we are trying to solve?” I took a closer look at six of the major options and what they are emphasizing today. Collibra Governance is at the center: stewardship, policies, workflows, catalog, lineage, data quality and increasingly AI governance. Alation Strong emphasis on helping people find, understand and trust data through discovery, catalog, governance, lineage and data quality. Microsoft Purview Especially relevant to Microsoft-heavy environments, with Data Map and Unified Catalog supporting domains, data products and data health alongside Microsoft's broader security and compliance capabilities. Atlan Built around active metadata, lineage, collaboration and governed context — increasingly including the context AI systems need to work safely with enterprise data. Informatica A broader enterprise data-management ecosystem where governance sits alongside catalog, lineage, data quality, privacy, MDM and integration. IBM watsonx.data intelligence Brings governance and catalog, data quality, lineage and data products together to provide trusted business context for enterprise data and AI. But product capabilities are only half the story. The part I'm much more interested in is the part we rarely see in a product demo: What happened when you actually implemented it? Did people adopt it? Did your Data Owners and Stewards actually use it? What took longer than expected? What looked easy in the demo but wasn't? What do you love about it? What drives you crazy? And the big one: Did the technology make governance better — or did it simply digitize governance problems you already had? That's why I haven't ranked these platforms. Different architecture. Different maturity. Different people. Different regulatory environments. Different problems to solve. Different answer.
