Durham & Toronto Residents with Breast Reconstruction or Implants Needed
Looking to Interview Durham/Toronto Residents Who’ve Had Breast Reconstruction or Breast Implants 💗
Hi everyone! My name is Shay Smith-Jaffer, and I’m a journalism student at Durham College currently working on a multi-faceted story about breast reconstruction surgery and breast implants — especially how these procedures intersect with affordability, personal experience, and sustainability.
The story will explore:
What the recovery journey is like after breast reconstruction or getting implants
How accessible and affordable these procedures are (especially under OHIP)
The environmental impact of operating rooms and traditional silicone implants
New developments in sustainable implant materials and eco-conscious hospital practices
I’m hoping to speak with people in the Durham Region who have had breast reconstruction surgery (including post-mastectomy, gender-affirming, or detransition-related procedures) or breast implants, and are willing to share their experience. This could be about why you chose the procedure, how it affected your life, any barriers you faced, and what you wish people knew about it.
All interviews will be handled respectfully and with full consent, and you can choose to be written, audio recorded, or videoed in the story (I do have a preference for video though).
If this sounds like something you’d be open to, please feel free to comment here or DM me and I’ll be happy to share more details and answer any questions.
Thank you for helping tell this important story 💗
— Shay
