Beyond the Hype: What the Geospatial Industry Is Missing
After nearly 50 years in the business, walking away from events like #Intergeo leaves me asking one major question:Are we solving real-world problems, or just chasing vanity metrics?
The industry is currently saturated with a race to the bottom on speed and arbitrary sound bites—like shouting about "3mm resolution" claims without ever defining whether we mean relative or absolute accuracy, or over what distance. It's just a nonsense soundbite, and unfortunately, that's what the client hears. In the grand scheme, those buzzwords are often meaningless.
Where the Industry is Missing the Mark
The Mobile Scanning Illusion:Current mobile sensors and camera resolutions often fail to capture true dynamic range, limiting what the data can actually be used for. 'I need to be able to read the serial number of the pump', says my client.
The Point Cloud Paradox:We capture massive amounts of data, yet few companies focus on what to do with all those point clouds or how to tackle internal GNSS-denied spaces.
Building Geo-Cloud Silos:Locking heavy 3D deliverables and complex files into proprietary environments that don't talk to the rest of the business creates massive friction.
A Lack of Imagination:Too many sales conversations stop at scanning the fastest, without asking clients what problem they actually need to solve
The Real Opportunity: The 80/20 Rule
Here is the hard truth:only 20% of a building’s total cost is in the design and construction phase.
Yet, the obsession with hyper-tight precision mostly lives in that initial phase. Once you step out of that bubble, our clients don’t work in X, Y, Z coordinates. They work inroom numbers and asset numbers.
They don't need heavy 3D models with this tacky-looking, horrible mesh edges; they need simple clarity they can use onanydevice, hosted on their private cloud or linked smoothly to SharePoint or Google Docs.
Introducing: Pixels for Purpose
It is time to stop picking fluff out of our navels and start talking about real-world solutions for real-world problems. That’s why I’m launchingPixels for Purpose— because a lot of people at Intergeo suggested I do it - a new weekly video series dedicated to cutting through the CAD/GIS/design noise and showing what geotechnology canactuallydeliver in the wild. For clients who really, really, really don't care about accuracy, vanity or point-cloud density.
They just want to find how to switch off the water from the leaking pipe at 3 am in a hospital from their phone.
First edition this weekend... it will be on our blog site and YouTube channel. There are already over 200 articles on it about photogrammetry, cameras, and reality capture; innovation; and what I call Beautiful Questions that help figure out the client's real problem. And how we can solve it.
If you have a real story you would like to share. please drop me a line.
