Historians & Academic Reviewers - Codename Grand Duchess Review

I would like to hear from historians, academics and experienced reviewers who might be interested in reviewing one of Helion’s most fascinating recent books, either for an academic journal or for a serious popular-history publication. Trine Engholm Michelsen’s 'Codename: Grand Duchess: Jutta Graae’s Clandestine Role Across Copenhagen, London and Stockholm in Allied–Danish Resistance, 1939–45' restores to the historical record a remarkable woman whose role in the Scandinavian resistance has remained surprisingly little known outside Denmark. Jutta Graae operated under several identities: “The Grand Duchess” in occupied Copenhagen, “The Scarlet Pimpernel” in Stockholm and “Haddock” to the British. Working through networks connecting Denmark, neutral Sweden and Britain, she became an important intermediary in intelligence gathering, clandestine communications, courier operations and the developing relationship between the Danish resistance and Britain’s secret services. The book consequently reaches well beyond biography. It sheds considerable new light on SOE activities in Denmark and Sweden, Danish military intelligence, the importance of Stockholm as a wartime intelligence and resistance hub, and the complicated evolution of resistance to Nazi occupation in Scandinavia. Its author is particularly well equipped to tell that story. Trine holds a PhD in international politics and spent two decades as an analyst in the Danish intelligence services. Her research draws extensively upon British, Danish and Swedish archival sources, bringing together material which has rarely been considered within a single study. There is also another reason why I would particularly like to help raise the profile of both Jutta and this book... efforts are underway to raise funds for a statue of Jutta Graae in Copenhagen, recognising publicly a woman whose contribution to Denmark’s wartime resistance was substantial but whose place in popular memory has never reflected the importance of the work she performed. Greater scholarly and public attention for Jutta’s story can, I hope, make a small contribution towards that wider effort.
