Independent Contractors & Estimators - Early Visibility Into Projects

I thought Broken Passage was mainly about succession. I was wrong. The deeper question is what happens whenever capability exists, but the passage into the next environment does not. That question led me straight to independent contractors. Two contractors can be equally capable. One hears about a project months before bid day. They know the GC. They understand the procurement environment. They know which requirements matter and who to call when something is unclear. The other discovers the same project when the solicitation appears. Same trade. Similar capability. Very different position. That distinction stayed with me. Markets are not flat. Opportunity does not reach everyone at the same time, through the same relationships, with the same context. So I started building COURT. COURT is being designed to help independent contractors see opportunity earlier, understand what it means for their business, and decide which opportunities are actually worth pursuing. Not simply: What can I bid? But: What is forming? What fits where my business is now? What could move it toward where I want it to go next? That means looking before the bid. Projects forming. Funding moving. Procurement taking shape. Requirements changing. Buyers repeating. Relationships forming. Because the biggest contract is not always the most important one. A smaller project might create the relationship. The relationship might create the reference. The reference might open the next market. That is the part I’m interested in. Not only opportunity. Movement. And somewhere in building COURT, the connection became obvious. I had not moved away from Broken Passage. I had moved closer to its original question. Broken Passage asks what happens when capability exists, but the passage into the next institutional environment does not. COURT is that question made observable. A contractor may have the skill. The market may have the opportunity. But between the two sit information, relationships, procurement, capital, timing, and institutional access. That space between capability and access is the passage. COURT is where I’m trying to map it. Real contractors. Real projects. Real institutions. Real pathways. Real decisions. Real money. I’ll be sharing what I find as I build. And I’d like some of that research to happen in public. If you’re an independent contractor, estimator, GC, procurement professional, advisor, or someone who works close to this market, I’d like to hear from you: Where have you seen a contractor fully capable of doing the work - but still too far from the information, relationships, requirements, or institutions needed to reach it? That gap is where I’m looking. Because capability is only one side of economic opportunity. The other side is passage.
