Lawyers & Journalists - On-Camera Threats By Israeli Prison Minister
When we made Bodies of Evidence, every testimony we filmed was met with the same word: allegation.
This week, the minister who runs Israel's prisons filmed himself in a cell telling a handcuffed prisoner "I want to kill you. I want to execute you." Then he published it as a campaign video. On camera, he adds: "Here, I'm responsible for hell."
No leak. No anonymous source. His own camera, his own account.
The prisoner, Hassan Salameh, was convicted over the 1996 bus bombings. His guilt is not the question. The question is what happens to the thousands of detainees whose names we never hear, when the official responsible for them says this on camera and expects applause.
20 years in this work taught me one thing: sometimes power does the documenting for you. Our job is to make sure nobody looks away.
Should threats officials make on camera be treated as evidence by courts and rights bodies? I'd like to hear from lawyers and journalists here.
