MP3 Users & Digital Culture Experts for Dazed Feature
I’m writing a feature about the unexpected revival of MP3 players and iPods.
I'll be exploring this trend as a significant cultural shift, rather than a simple Y2K gimmick. The piece will analyse how the single-purpose MP3 player is becoming a tool for digital deceleration and "focused listening", offering an escape from the notification-heavy anxiety of the smartphone.
It'll also look at the return to true ownership as a rebellion against the leasing of culture (via subscriptions) from streaming giants. I'll uncover why manually curating a personal library for MP3 players is returning as a form of identity-building, and what these single-use devices say about personal values in today's world.
I’m looking to speak to:
- Music fans who have actively chosen to use an MP3 player or a classic iPod over streaming (ideally aged 16-28, but can be anyone!)
- Tech or media analysts
- Digital culture commentators
- Sociologists or psychologists specialising in Gen Z and digital wellbeing.
...and anyone who has interesting insights to share – DM me, comment or send this to anyone who may be a good fit!
