Recovery begins long before the operation.
We tend to picture recovery as the part that comes after surgery. The physical therapy, milestones, and slow return to normal. But by the time a patient reaches the operating room, much of how they will heal is already in motion, shaped by their nutrition, their conditioning, their mental readiness, and how well they understand the road ahead.
The operation is one step. A crucial one. But one step in a much longer plan.
This week I spent time with Dr. Ahmed Siddiqi, an orthopedic surgeon who has built his practice around exactly this idea. He prepares the whole patient long before the incision. Nutrition, physiology, education, mental readiness, so the surgery lands on a body and a mind that are ready to heal.
We talked for an hour and share a common mindset. The best outcomes come from optimizing the whole patient, and from helping patients understand that they are active partners in their own recovery. Not just a technically perfect surgery.
Over the next few weeks Ahmed and I are recording a series of long conversations about the whole arc of surgical care, that we plan to share. Preparation, education, nutrition, mental readiness, and the personalized support that carries a patient all the way home.
Here is the question I would love your help thinking through. If we treated the journey before and after surgery with the same intention we give the operation itself, how much better could recovery be?
I want to hear from the surgeons, the builders, and the patients. Where do you land?
