Ten years ago, Nikole Hannah-Jones put her kindergartner on the cover of The New York Times Magazine as a symbol of school integration. This week she published a follow-up in which her daughter, Najya, now 16, tells her she never got the education she wanted. And Nikole apologized. I've disagreed with Nikole about integration and school choice for years, sometimes in haste and not always kindly. Her essay is the most honest thing I've read from the integration side of this debate, and it deserved a serious response, so I wrote one.
