Poultry Farmers & Policymakers in India - Corn Food Feed Fuel

🌽 India’s corn: Food, Feed or Fuel? India’s poultry industry consumes around 60% of the country’s corn production. At the same time, an increasing share of corn is being diverted towards ethanol production. With ethanol blending reaching 20%, competition for corn is becoming increasingly intense. Corn prices have already risen sharply, putting pressure on poultry feed costs and, eventually, on the prices of eggs and chicken. This raises a much bigger question: Can India achieve Fuel Security without compromising Food Security and Protein Security? Corn is not just an industrial raw material. It is a critical ingredient in poultry feed, and therefore directly linked to the affordability of eggs and chicken - two of India’s most accessible sources of animal protein. The debate should not be simply “ethanol vs poultry.” It should be about finding the right balance between: 🌽 Food 🐔 Animal Feed ⛽ Fuel 🇮🇳 Food & Protein Security As India’s demand for both energy and affordable protein continues to grow, how should we prioritise our limited corn resources?
