UK people: experience with Sharia councils?
Hi, I'm Terri, and I work for Faith to Faithless, a service of Humanists UK. We support people who have left high-control religious groups in the UK. We have online peer support sessions every week, online socials, a women's group, and LGBT group, and in-person social events every month throughout the UK.
If you are interested in joining any of that, email us at [email redacted]. We have a registration form to fill in, and then you would have an informal video call with us that we call the safety chat. This is so we can explain our services, answer any questions you might have, and to ensure the safety of all of our service users. I hope that makes sense, email me if you have questions.
Sharia Councils experiences:
However, the reason I'm posting today is because we had a journalist get in touch who would like to hear from people, especially women, who have experience of using sharia councils in the UK. She is writing a long form piece on how they impact women in the UK. But we've had no one come forward, so maybe this isn't as big an issue as we thought? Or maybe the people likely to be involved with those don't tend to leave Islam? Happy to hear people's thoughts. I've created a form if you wanted to share your stories, obviously it's voluntary, and you can be involved as much or as little as you like. So if you wanted to share your story anonymously, or just your thoughts, happy to hear them. Or if you wanted to talk to the journalist, just let us know and I can connect you. I have spoken to her at length and she seems pretty cool, she went through her ethics code with me, and I thought it was good. She has said she will always maintain the confidentiality of her sources.
