Is G2 legit? It rejected a third of Q1 2026 submissions as fraud, but scores 2.8/5 on its own reviews.
I publish research on marketintelligencetools.com, and I've recently finished a deep read on G2's own Q1 2026 moderation numbers. G2 grades the software you buy, but few scrutinize G2 the same way, so I tried.
If you've ever pulled up a G2 category page to shortlist a tool before a demo call, you already trust this platform more than you've probably thought about.
Has a G2 star rating or badge ever swung a purchase decision for you, or does it just narrow the list before the real evaluation starts?
Start with what makes G2 look rigorous. Of 244,078 review submissions in Q1 2026, it approved 154,625 (63.3%) and rejected 89,453.
Of that rejected batch, 31,014 were flagged as fake outright: 18,735 identity failures (no LinkedIn, business email, or screenshot) against 12,279 incentive-abuse cases.
G2 says it checks every submission against 43 data points, runs automated fraud detection, and backs it with human review from a Trust & Safety team. It joined the Coalition for Trusted Reviews on 23 October 2025, alongside Amazon, Trustpilot, Booking.com, Tripadvisor, Glassdoor, and the Better Business Bureau.

If you've ever managed a vendor's G2 profile, did a review of yours ever get held up or rejected, and did the stated reason match what happened?
Now the other side. G2 itself carries a 2.8 out of 5 rating on Trustpilot across 4,927 reviews, on the same peer-review model it sells to every company on its platform.
One reviewer, Hayden Smith, wrote on 14 October 2025: "This company baits you into writing a review by offering gift cards. After spending time and effort submitting a review etc they will say no gift cards are available." G2's public reply said it couldn't locate an account under that username and asked for the email tied to it; it never addressed the reward itself.
G2's reward program caps at $100 a review, and two independent trackers of the program, Score My Reviews and Team4 Agency, report the actual payout usually runs closer to a $10 gift card.
If a vendor has ever emailed you asking for a G2 review in exchange for one, did it show up, and did it match what you were promised?
Another reviewer, Sally, described support this way on 26 September 2025: "Trying to get hold of a real person is next to impossible if you are a paying customer. Support cancels tickets without any response or assistance."

On LinkedIn, the argument gets more pointed. Victoria Dalleau, who says she's building the platform Hyperline, asked outright if G2 is a big scam, pointing to reviews mostly coming from customers a vendor specifically solicited, sometimes with a reward attached.
Benoit Decoene, in AI business development at element61, argued the opposite: that G2's screenshot verification and named references make a review more trustworthy than a testimonial on a sales slide.
Which side of that do you land on, and has your own experience with G2 pushed you one way or the other?
Then there's the part most buyers don't know yet. On 5 February 2026, G2 closed a $110.0 million purchase of Capterra, Software Advice, and GetApp from Gartner.
If part of your due-diligence process has ever been "check the G2 score, then cross-check it against Capterra," you've been checking two listings under one owner since that date. Neither Capterra's nor GetApp's guidelines have been updated to tie their verification standard to G2's 43-point system six months later.
Did you know these were the same company now, and does that change how you'd use either one?

There's a size angle too. G2's own Enterprise tier, where the deeper analytics and buyer-intent tools live, runs a median contract of roughly $28,000 a year per Vendr's tracked data, pricing out a lot of the early-stage vendors most dependent on review visibility in the first place.
One more data point worth checking: the FTC's rule on manipulated reviews, finalized in August 2024, has already been used once, against a competing aggregator, Sitejabber, in November 2024. That case involved ratings collected at checkout before a customer had used the product; one retailer's 83,154-review profile there fell from a 4.72-star average to 2.19 once those were excluded.
No FTC action against G2 appears in the same enforcement record. Does that read as G2 running a cleaner operation, or just one the FTC hasn't gotten to yet?
So, is G2 legit? Its own numbers show a business actively fighting a real fraud problem, over a third of everything submitted in Q1 2026 never went live, while also carrying a 2.8-out-of-5 rating on the same kind of review it sells, with a reward program some reviewers say doesn't pay what it promises.
Both of those are true about G2 at the same time, and reading the rating without the second half of that picture misses most of what's useful in it.
What did you see?
I'd like to hear from three groups specifically:
buyers who've used a G2 score to make or kill a purchase decision,
vendors who've managed a G2 profile and dealt with its moderation or reward program directly,
anyone who's compared a G2 rating against Capterra, GetApp, or Trustpilot for the same tool and gotten a different read from each.

Disclosure: I run this site. No ads. I do the research because I find it interesting, it's good practice for my day job, found out that I like building sites from scratch in static HTML, and figured this sub's audience would get something out of it too.
