Young New Yorkers with Unconventional NYC Housing Setups
What’s your weirdest NYC housing setup? (Looking to talk to people for a story on how young New Yorkers make it work)
Hey everyone — I’m writing a story about how young people find creative ways to live in NYC despite the rent.
I’m looking to talk to people who’ve had unconventional housing arrangements — past or present.
That could mean things like:
Living in a railroad apartment or right by the subway tracks
Sleeping in a “flex” room made with temporary walls
Turning a living room into a bedroom (or vice versa)
Living in someone’s converted office, dining room, or walk-in closet
Sharing a space with an older roommate, subletting without a lease, or other unique setups
Basically, anything that makes people say: “Wait, you live where?” 😅
I’m especially curious about why people make these choices — what you’re chasing, what makes it worth it, and how you think about “home” in a city like this.
If you’re open to chatting for 10–15 minutes, I’d love to hear your story.
