Next up: another upcoming print Wall Street Journal piece. I’m looking for high-end boutique hotels (and people who own them or have stayed in them) that are preserved monasteries, convents, etc. Read my brief below carefully. This Ancient Building Was a Convent for 500 Years. Now You Can Stay There Across Europe and beyond, centuries-old monasteries, convents and palazzos are being transformed into some of the country’s most intriguing boutique hotels. Intimate, design-forward properties, often with only a handful of rooms, preserve historic architecture while layering in contemporary comforts. These stays offer a rare blend of cultural heritage and modern luxury, often tucked away in lesser-known towns and landscapes apart from the typical tourist spots. Do you rep anywhere like this? Or know someone who stayed in an ancient convent? I’m specifically thinking of La Bandita Townhouse in Tuscany, where I had a magical stay years ago. I’m gonna guess Spain, France, and Greece have similar spots. Email me ASAP: with the subject line “Ancient Boutique Hotels.”

Last week, news dropped that Paris-based Ledger was prepping for an IPO in the US that could value the crypto walletmaker at more than $4bn. If the listing goes ahead, it would be one of the first VC-backed European crypto companies to IPO. The $4bn price tag is far more conservative than the valuations secured by US-based crypto scaleups at IPO in recent months. This has got me thinking about whether Ledger’s origin as a European company has been a problem. When Klarna was planning an IPO, some analysts told me its more conservative price tag was due to being thought of as a non-US company. Like Klarna, Ledger is one of the rare European fintechs that has seen traction in the US, selling devices at BestBuy and growing its US team. What do you think, reader? Do European companies face valuation headwinds when opting to list abroad in the US? Or are US stock exchanges the most appropriate listing venue for European scaleups hoping to fetch billion dollar valuations? ]Let me know over email.
One company has been dominating conversations, WhatsApp exchanges and hot takes on LinkedIn for the past month: AMI Labs. The startup, recently launched by Meta’s former chief AI scientist Yann LeCun, is causing near-unprecedented levels of excitement, both in French tech and abroad. There’s not an investor I’ve spoken to who doesn’t have a view on LeCun’s pitch to build “world models”, a type of AI that can understand the physical world instead of merely generating text like large-language models (LLMs). LeCun initially set out to raise €500m for his new project; last week my colleague Anne Sraders and I reported he’s attracted at least $1.5bn in investor interest, and is likely to close a bigger round than planned. Sources also told us chip titan Nvidia and Singapore-based investor Temasek are in talks to back the company. AMI Labs will have a base in Paris, and VCs are piling in to be part of the fun. “Every single investor in Paris is overexcited and wants to be a part of it,” one investor tells me, “even for small tickets that’ll give insignificant weight in the cap table and governance.” I’m curious to know what might happen next: how will LeCun’s bet to build a world-leading AI company focusing on a new type of AI model affect Europe’s tech sector? Send me your thoughts ]here.
