Not just because the fabric is a breakthrough. Because building the entry properly exposed something worth talking about. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 Aloe vera fabric is marketed as a plant-based, fully biodegradable alternative to cotton — soft, breathable, temperature-regulating, and grown from a crop that needs far less water than conventional cotton. On paper, it's exactly the kind of material a materials library should be excited to feature. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 The base claims are plausible and consistent across suppliers: breathable, moisture-regulating handle similar to cotton, biodegradable end-of-life, and accessible pricing with low MOQs — genuinely useful for small brands and student projects who can't meet the volume requirements bigger "future materials" demand. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 — 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝘄𝗲'𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 When we tried to fill in the technical fields every entry in our library requires — tensile strength, water/land footprint vs. cotton, a circularity score — the data simply isn't out there. Not "hard to find." Not published, period, for this specific commercial product. Digging further surfaced something bigger: there are two entirely different things being sold under the name "aloe vera fabric." Some suppliers microencapsulate aloe gel into a conventional base fibre (often cotton or viscose) as a skincare finish. Others claim aloe itself as the structural fibre — but the only peer-reviewed research we could find on extracting an actual textile fibre from aloe plant matter was published in 2024, and it describes itself as the first report of its kind. The commercial claims are running ahead of the science. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 This is exactly the gap a materials library should exist to close. Instead of repeating supplier marketing copy as fact, we're publishing the entry with the data gaps visible and labelled — and using it as a teaching moment: how do you evaluate a "sustainable" material when the underlying production claim itself hasn't been independently verified? DIY? For students and educators, that's arguably more valuable than another fully-populated spec sheet. For brands, it's a reminder to ask suppliers for real test data before a "biodegradable" or "low-impact" claim goes on a hangtag. We'll update this entry the moment better data exists, even if we have to run the tests ourselves.
