American Church Donors - When Pastor Donations Become Exploitation

Hoping to ask people about America's commodification of Christianity Hello! I'm an independent, Christian journalist who writes about religious corruption. I'm working on a story now that explores more deeply the consequences of commodifying Christianity. I'm hoping to reach out to some of the people on this sub to be able to ask them some questions about this topic. I'm specifically wondering what people believe is the point at which a pastor asking for donations goes from "supporting the church" to exploiting his congregants. There are people like Conley Owens, one of the pastors from Selling Jesus, a ministry that serves to inform people about the Biblical perspective against commodifying Christ, who think everything the pastor comes up with should be public domain, and that the pastor should rely solely on the willing donations of the congregation for their living. I think I agree with him, but then my opinion was further complicated when I thought about the fact that Cornel West, who I respect, makes money from his book sales, etc., and I think I'm okay with that because the work he does is truly intellectually demanding. THEN, I looked into whether or not Gustavo Gutierrez made money from sales of his A Liberation Theology, which for me was life-changing, and of course I found that he took a vow of poverty and made nothing from it, which I also respect immensely. But now I'm just slightly perplexed. I really would like to know what other people think about the commodification of Christianity, where donations begin and where they enter into "profit," even despite the non-taxable status of a ministry.
