Children’s Residential Home Staff for Turnover Research Interviews
Culture, Pistachios and a Gorilla we never saw coming
Sitting here casually enjoying my pistachio garrapiñadas that I bought in my half-term break in Andalucia and I just noticed a little icon on my Google home screen letting me know it's 'World' Pistachio Day.
Serendipity.
Or is it?
Would I have noticed the little icon if I wasn't stuffing my face with them?
It reminds me just how much attention is selective. Have you heard about the experiment where people completely miss the person in the gorilla suit walking across the basketball court when they are told to count the passes?
This is exactly what happens at work. Leaders are so busy dealing with today's crisis, ensuring compliance, focussing on operations and quality of care and education for young people and completely miss the signs that their culture is falling apart.
The signs (and the pistachio) were always there.
What's worse is that by the time you see the signs, it's too late. A manager or key member of staff has handed in their resignation or worse, the culture has led to a safeguarding or other critical failure.
If only we were on the lookout for those pistachios.
Mine are gone but I hope you find some of your own.
By the way, I'm looking to speak to those that work in children's residential homes to do some research around the staff turnover crisis. I'm only asking for a 10-15 minute chat. I'm not selling or pitching anything! If this is you or you can connect me, please comment or send me a DM. Thanks.
