College Educators & Workforce Leaders - Align Programs With Local Jobs

Higher Education Insights | Episode 011 Are we preparing students for jobs that actually exist? That's a question I believe every college should be willing to ask. Students invest their time, energy, and resources in education because they believe it will help create a better future. That places a responsibility on us. We have to understand what's happening in the communities we serve. Where are employers hiring? Which industries are growing? What skills are becoming more valuable? Where are the gaps between what employers need and what our students are learning? Those conversations can't happen only inside academic departments. They require faculty, workforce leaders, employers, economic development organizations, and community partners to stay in conversation with one another. And they require us to listen to students as well. Because ultimately, a program should have a clear answer when a student asks: “Where can this education take me?” I've spent much of my career working at the intersection of education and workforce development, and I continue to believe that some of our strongest programs are built when education and opportunity remain connected. What should colleges be doing differently to stay aligned with the workforce needs of their communities? I'd especially like to hear from educators, employers, and workforce leaders.
