Counter UAS & NATO Air Defense Officials - Accidental Drone Incursions

The drone that exploded near Kardam may have been Ukrainian and may have crossed into Bulgaria accidentally. Bulgaria has now summoned Ukraine’s ambassador even though no casualties or infrastructure damage were reported. That does not make the incident less important. It makes NATO’s air defense problem harder because the aircraft did not fit a clean category: it may have belonged to a partner, may have been diverted by electronic warfare or technical failure, and still carried enough explosive energy to threaten communities and critical gas infrastructure. The hard part of Counter UAS is making a lawful decision while ownership, control, intent, and final trajectory remain uncertain.
