Engineering Leaders - Communicating With Non-Engineers

Engineers are so trained in the precision of their work that they sometimes apply that same precision to the way they communicate. The harder skill is finding clarity and connecting with people who aren't engineers themselves. Last week, I was on a panel at the American Society for Engineering Education (2026 Engineering Deans Conference) in New Orleans with Andrew Singer, Dean of Stony Brook University College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, along with Tsu-Jae Liu and Dr. David C. Munson Jr from Rochester Institute of Technology. After we wrapped, I caught up with Andy and kept the conversation going. Check out the video. There are more conversations coming from different perspectives with engineering leaders, which brings me to an outstanding engineering division Louisiana State University -- looking at you, LSU College of Engineering. I can't wait to share those next. But let's start with this conversation with Andy. Good leaders know when to shine a light on others doing important work. This ninety second series is a way of doing exactly that. Know an engineering leader, or a leader in another science or field, with something to say about communication? Comment below or send me a message. I'm building this series and I want to hear from you. #EngineeringCommunication #ASEE2026 #SciComm #Engineering #LeadershipDevelopment #HigherEd #STEM
