Frontline Manufacturing Employees - From Compliance to Ownership

YOU DON'T WANT COMPLIANCE. YOU WANT OWNERSHIP. There's a point in leadership where simply getting people to do what they're told isn't enough. Compliance says: "I'll do it because my supervisor told me to." Ownership says: "I'll do it because I understand why it matters." That's a completely different culture. I don't want safety to matter only when leadership is watching. I don't want 5S performed because someone heard a supervisor was walking through the area. I don't want quality checked because someone is afraid of getting written up. And I don't want production to improve only because management is standing beside the machine. The goal should be to create an environment where people understand the standard, believe in the standard, and eventually begin holding themselves—and one another—to it. That's when culture starts becoming stronger than supervision. But there's another side to this. Leaders have to give people enough responsibility to actually develop ownership. We can't make every decision for employees and then complain that they don't take initiative. Sometimes we have to give people room to lead. So here's the question I'm exploring for my book: How does a leader move a team from compliance to genuine ownership? I'd especially like to hear from frontline employees: What has a leader done that made you personally care about the success of your department rather than simply doing your job? #Leadership #Ownership #Manufacturing #Accountability #WorkplaceCulture #TheStandardWeAccept
