Gen Z Men & Sociologists - Emotional Openness in Male Friendships

Hello, connections! “Off Campus” has been making waves for quite some time now. Inspired by the camaraderie among the boys on the show, I’m currently working on a story about how Gen Z men are beginning to open up to their male friends about childhood trauma, insecurities, emotional struggles, and even the importance of apologising when necessary. Growing up, I was often surrounded by boys in school and college whose conversations largely revolved around sports, partying, and everyday banter. Vulnerability and emotional honesty, especially within male friendships, seemed rare. However, shows like “Off Campus” appear to be sparking conversations around masculinity that embrace emotional openness, self-reflection, and healing. For this story, I’m looking to speak with Gen Z men who are fostering emotionally supportive friendships, working through personal challenges, and growing alongside their male friend groups. While women have long relied on their friendships for emotional support, it’s interesting to see similar dynamics emerge among young men today. I’m also looking to connect with sociologists and experts who can share their insights on this shift in male friendships and emotional expression.
