Long-Term Talc Users With Mesothelioma - Diagnosis & Talc Link

Talcum Powder and Asbestos Talc mesothelioma cases happen because talc and asbestos are minerals that form close together in the ground. When talc is mined, asbestos fibers often come with it, and that contamination ends up in the final powdered product. Cosmetic-grade talc has tested anywhere from trace amounts up to 30% asbestos, depending on the source. The diseases tied to long-term talc use include mesothelioma, ovarian cancer and lung cancer. The pattern is dose-dependent, so the more often and longer someone used it, the higher the risk. A 2023 study described 166 mesothelioma cases in people whose only known asbestos exposure was cosmetic talc. The Johnson & Johnson litigation has been the most public example of how widespread this has been. Court documents revealed that company officials knew asbestos had been in Johnson's Baby Powder since the 1950s. J&J pulled the product from U.S. shelves in 2020 and ended global sales by 2022. As of late 2024, the company was facing more than 60,000 asbestos-related lawsuits. Other brands have come up in similar lawsuits too, including Avon, Cashmere Bouquet, Old Spice and Desert Flower products. If you used talc-based products consistently for years and have been diagnosed with mesothelioma or another asbestos-related disease, would love to hear from you. How long did it take you to get diagnosed, and when did the talc connection first come up?
