Near Eastern Archaeologists - Tall el-Hammam Airburst Debate

The Tall el-Hammam airburst hypothesis: what's the current state of the debate? I've been reading through the 2021 Scientific Reports paper by Bunch, Collins, Silvia et al. on the destruction layer at Tall el-Hammam — the one proposing a cosmic airburst around 1650 BCE, based on shocked quartz, melted pottery, and nanodiamonds. What I find interesting is how contested it remains. The paper drew significant methodological criticism, and some of the imagery in it was flagged for manipulation. At the same time, the destruction layer itself is real and does need explaining. For those who follow Near Eastern archaeology more closely: where does the debate actually stand now? Is the airburst reading still considered viable, or has the field largely moved on? And is there a competing explanation for the melt features that has more support? (I've been researching this in depth for a documentary project, so I'm genuinely trying to represent the state of the evidence accurately rather than pick a side.)
