New Virginia Attorneys & Bar Candidates - Carrico Professionalism Course
I'm looking to talk with people who were recently admitted to practice in Virginia, or who are preparing to take the Virginia bar, about the mandatory Harry L. Carrico Professionalism Course. Virginia requires every new lawyer to complete this course within 24 months of admission. The course is named for former Chief Justice Harry L. Carrico. In 1966, Justice Carrico wrote the Virginia Supreme Court opinion in Loving v. Commonwealth that upheld Virginia's ban on interracial marriage. The U.S. Supreme Court overturned that decision in 1967 in Loving v. Virginia. If you have thoughts about being required to take this course in order to practice, whether you support it, have concerns, feel ambivalent, or have questions about the name and its history, I'd like to hear from you. I welcome all perspectives, and I'm especially hoping to hear from attorneys of color and others whose families would have been directly affected if Loving had not prevailed. Conversations can be on the record, on background, or completely off the record. Please DM me here or email me if you're open to talking, even briefly. Sharing is appreciated if you know someone this might resonate with. email, [email redacted].
