Resets, Revolutions, and Recalibrations: What's Next for the Video Game Industry? Yes, 2026, has been challenging for the games industry. In MBA-speak, it's been a mofo. The tectonic shifts have been felt globally...yet, they're so often concentrated here in the PNW. The internet and LinkedIn exploded this week with announcements about the Halo Studios layoffs. More "resets." Surprisingly, mainstream media generated little press. However, as usual, I'm more interested in microjournalism. The stories of change and managing the liminal spaces of what's next...written by artists and employees within the video game industry. What can we do? Fight. Personally, I've never hit my "weekly limits" for connecting and commenting on LinkedIn more than in 2026. All of those comments about jobs, "commenting for reach," and support hashtags (#OpenToWork). It's like running low on mana. Or ammo. Pick your metaphor. The bitter irony of "Commenting for Reach" isn't lost on me. Gaming language makes sense in these epic times. Game companies are shifting priorities, wrestling with AI, and attempting to adapt to a fragmented market with limitless options for gaming consumers. Almost any game...on any platform...anytime. This vicious battle for dollars and eyeballs is real. Are we repeating the crash of 1983? What about unionization? Is the industry's biggest clash an East vs. West mentality (à la Japanese developers staying leaner)? Or is the industry overly conflicted between AAA titles vs. lower-budget indie projects? Either way...layoffs hit hard. Sometimes, especially so when it's juggernauts: Microsoft, Bungie, Id, Halo Studios. Some experts say the video game industry is "recalibrating. But it's not going away. The industry, like gamers, knows better. Out of credits? So what. Out of quarters? Meh. Low on HP? Never give up. Don't forget that the video games industry has recovered before. And remember when video games beat Hollywood in revenue? That was a holy sh\*t moment for video games. Sorry, I meant "inflection point." So, as a gamer, I'll step it up. I've updated the video game job links database on my site. No paywalls. No signups. No subscriptions. No fees. No BS. If it were me, I might shoot for Nintendo (I still have my original Legend of Zelda gold cartridge. And Hyrule map). Maybe Obsidian (We all know Fallout: New Vegas is still the best in the series). Perhaps Duolingo (500+ day streak and I'm loving the Brawl Stars collab). Or ZA/UM...I've literally gifted their masterpiece Disco Elysium. Regardless, I'm hopeful the industry isn't crashing like the early 80s. An industry full of creative talent that beat Hollywood still has a bright future. We humans cherish our myths, our legends...and our games. To be continued. \\\* P.S.
