I’m writing a mini-booklet called "How to Fly a Plane". It will contain almost no useful aviation advice. This meme seems to have become the symbol of figuring it out on the way and yet I was disappointed to find that this book doesn't actually exist in real life and I really wanted it on my coffee table. It is going to be about the art of sidequesting: saying yes before you know exactly how, entering unfamiliar worlds and accumulating unusual skills, stories and occasional administrative problems along the way. But my haphazard experience aside, I want to understand how other people do it. How do you pursue several unrelated interests without abandoning the main quest? How do generalists, freelancers and contractors manage radically different projects at once? When is it worth risking rejection or your personal reputation for an improbable opportunity? And how do you distinguish productive curiosity from simply opening another browser tab for your life?
