Smokejumpers - Daily Life & Personal Experiences

Hello, I’m a writer and I’d like to write a story about a smokejumper. I have long been fascinated by the bravery and duties of wilderness firefighters, but my knowledge is essentially surface deep. Of course I’m not coming in completely blind, I’ve done a good bit of research and intend to do a great deal more before I embark on the task of actually writing this particular book. But I’m really looking to try to understand the nature of the job on a more personal level, i.e. what’s the daily life of a smokejumper like? What is life like when they aren’t deployed? What does it feel like to jump, to land, to work in those extreme environments and conditions? I apologize if this is the wrong community to ask these types of questions in, I just don’t know of a better way to potentially get some personal insight into the service of wilderness firefighters. I live in the southern US, in an area where we don’t often have fires, and we certainly don’t have a locality of smokejumpers I could approach and ask. Any help or input is appreciated!
