Slow travel may have a new contender. Micro-cations — short trips lasting two to four days — are gaining traction as time-stretched travellers attempt to tick off more places, make better use of paid leaves, and book last minute trips. Flying to a different country for just three days over a long weekend isn’t unheard of anymore, and there’s reason to believe this trend will continue, and even grow, over the course of the year.
For my upcoming story for BBC Travel, I’m reporting and writing a feature around this shift. I’ll be digging into where the trend started and why, how it’s manifesting (where people are going, and on what terms), its consequences for the places we visit and for the environment, and how tour operators are responding to this changing demand.
I’m currently in the douse-myself-in-all-sorts-of-information-on-the-topic stage, and I’m open to hearing from psychologists, tourism experts, tour operators, and, of course, travellers themselves who have something to share based on their experiences.
